Nursery Schools

What's the difference between nursery and preschool?
Preschools usually work around a formal curriculum and trained teachers - making them a little more expensive! Nursery schools are usually a more relaxed learning environment and more flexible enrolment terms. They are also cheaper and vary greatly.

What age is a preschooler? Ages up to 4 is considered preschooler with toddlers are 1 - 3 year old bracket. Basically 4-year-old are not 'toddling' around any more and so are no longer toddlers!

What does preschool mean? A preschool, or nursery school, is a pre-primary school, or play school for early childhood education. Preschool is for children before they begin compulsory education at primary school.

Is Pre K considered preschool? Pre K schools are pre-kindergartens.

First Steps Nursery York

Stirling Rd, York YO30 4TU, UK – 01904 693007

My daughter has been at this Nursery since she was 9 months & goes to school in September. She loves it & I have had to promise she can go to the holiday club there when she starts school as she doesn't want to leave. The staff are all approachable & helpful. There is a family atmosphere amongst staff. The new manager Hannah has really taken on the role well, the nursery is well organised & from previously being a nursery nurse there, she knows the children well & this shows in the communication to parents. I would recommend this nursery to anyone. My daughter is always happy to go.

My 2 year old and (only child) goes to First steps. I was very nervous and apprehensive about leaving him with strangers. All for nothing! The people here are AMAZING! Lovely and completely put me at ease. Every single member of staff has made an effort with my son and I couldn't be happier. Since attending, he's really come out of his shell and become a new little boy. He's SO EXCITED for nursery days!!!! Thank you!

Theresa's

The Pavilion, Calf Cl, Haxby, York YO32 3NX, UK – 01904 765005

My daughter attended between the ages of 2 years and 4 years and 10 months ( September baby ) The experience has been fantastic .Having worked with early years myself previously I have to say I held a lot of concerns. This nursery is rare in that it really cares as much about emotional health as educational achievement. Far to many nurseries are obsessed with tick box exercises. Theresa's ethos is that if play is encouraged a child will learn . My daughter was never keen on sitting down to learn , would run off - refuse point blank ! The nursery worked with her , thought of ways to encourage without been pushy . She started school excited and enthusiastic . I'm happy to say she is doing fantastic at school and a year ahead in reading .I believe had they not had such a child centered approach and followed her lead she wouldn't be as she is now she was also very difficult to potty train - again they were nothing but fantastic . A truely wonderful nursery.

After School Care

Little Acorns

Hartrigg Oak/Lucombe Way, York YO32 4DS, UK – 01904 766866

Little Acorns is an absolutely fantastic nursery. It's clean, the staff are outstanding, it has great resources, is compliant and provides a healthy, friendly and welcoming atmosphere for young children. Having seen other nurseries in the area, Little Acorns stands out head and shoulders above the rest in terms of quality, hygiene and care for the kids. I had reservations about sending my daughter to a nursery, but now I am calling the team begging them to take my second child! I can't praise the nursery, and staff, highly enough.

The York Riding School

Wigginton Rd, York YO32 2RH, UK – 07516 995988

My daughter has been having group lessons here every week for just over a year now and has recently started having private lessons once a week alongside the group lessons. All the staff are friendly, helpful, positive and patient. Would definitely recommend for anybody from complete beginners, to those who are already confident and competent riders.

I gifted my horse to here and she loves it with all her pals. Lol.

Rachael Wherry

23 The Avenue, Park Estate, York YO32 3EH, UK – 01904 768000

My two children (9 and 6) having been having lessons with Rachael for the last few years. Rachael makes the lessons really fun and engages the children with a range of games and techniques. They both love using the iPad to check their note reading skills! Rachael is warm and welcoming and brought out the best in our initially shy little girl. I would have no hesitation in recommending Rachael, she is a very skilled teacher. Not to mention the annual Christmas concert which is a highlight in our calendar!

A few years ago I decided I would love to be able to play the piano despite having no previous musical knowledge at all. I booked a lesson with Rachael just to see how I would get on and right from the start I found her lessons really enjoyable and well organised. I have now been attending for a couple of years and am working towards my next grade. Rachael through her positive and encouraging approach enables me to get the best out of the limited time I have without any pressure. Thank you. Adult learner.

Explore Learning York

Sainsbury's, Monks Cross Dr, Huntington, York YO32 9LG, UK – 01904 406355

Since starting at Explore Learning, my child's confidence and ability has grown dramatically in Literacy. The support and friendliness from all of the staff encourages the children to want to learn and my son now asks for help if he has a question when he wouldn't in school. Thank you so much to all the staff for their hard work, keep up the good work.

Before starting at Explore my son was worried about going to school on days that Maths was being taught. He had no confidence and wouldn't raise his hand in class for fear of being wrong. Since starting explore 18 months ago,and having tutors who have time to listen and explain clearly ,in a friendly and welcoming manner ,he has grown into a confident ,well rounded young man who now loves maths lessons in school. He got great marks in his sats ,and has worked his way into the top maths class in his year, using the strategies taught to him by the tutors at Explore.. His latest report ,and expected attainment level is now way above average, across the board. I would recommend Explore to anyone who asked and need to say a huge thank you to the wonderful tutors who work there. They make learning fun and exciting, the way it should be .
