Find the best Earswick walks. The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional resource for all walkers, hikers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. This site lists everything from historical walks to leader led walks to any really arduous walks within the York Garrison area.

Find A Walk Near Me by using Walking Britain is a truly excellent and free resource. Just enter where you are or where you would like to walk - and print out directions. The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

The Range, York

Jockey Ln, Huntington, York YO32 9NE, UK – 01904 624326

I often visit this store for hobbies and craft... good variety of products available and better value than another nearby hobby-craft store. Parking is free but recently parking restrictions have been introduced - if you're staying longer than 2 hours you must let customer services know otherwise you will incur a parking fine.

A large store with a very extensive range of everything and anything. A very good selection of craft products and most items are very affordable. The store is easy to navigate and and find most products. Staff are helpful and very friendly. The store is well worth a visit if you are looking for most household items. Would highly reccomend this store.

B&M Home Store

Clifton Moor Retail Park, Hurricane Way, York YO30 4XZ, UK – 0330 838 9430

I do love B&M, but on a visit today, a lot of the shelves where empty. A huge disappointment. as it took an hour to get there

Typical B+M surely not a lot to be said. Big range of items, food to paint. Reasonable prices.

Topps Tiles York (Clifton Moor)

2, Clifton Moore Center, Clifton Moor Centre, York YO30 4WZ, UK – 01904 690214

Order white tiles, they were ready for collection pretty quickly and helped load them into the car. Great service, quality products.

Mark and his team are excellent they know exactly what your looking for weather it be tiles or underfloor heating, mark has an unbelievable talent and the team are very welcoming and helpful would highly recommend tops tiles York

WalkingWorld.jpg
Another good walking guide. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the UK. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks. You get one walk free.

Crucially you can also find walks France, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Australia!

Camping and Caravaning

York Beechwood Grange Caravan and Motorhome Club Site

Malton Rd, York YO32 9TH, UK – 01904 424637

Good location and easy access although the approach road could do with some repairs to the potholes. The office is on the small side with little supplies but serves its purpose. Only met one warden who was friendly enough.security is via a keyed barrier. One toilet block...didn't use so can't comment but as with most caravan clubs sites expectations are high. Pitches are quite spacious and of course the electric is flawless. The site generally is rather open and bland but we didn't spend too much time in the caravan. Nearby pub serves meals and the nearby park and ride for York is great. All in all it's the location near to York at a great price which is what mattered to us so would highly recommend.

A few years since I had my mare there . Visited a friends new foal and was greeted by Steve . No change there still the same old Steve . A very professional set up

The Little Hide

Willow House Caravan Park, Wigginton Road, Wigginton YO32 2RH, UK – 07713 194299

Great little glamping place, excellent for couples and for large groups (like ours) it was perfect. Highlights: super comfy bed, very quiet area, lots of room in the pod for two, lovely veranda and great Communal area with BBQ, for pit and fridges. Lowlight: slightly damp smelling (but clean) shower rooms. (I think a squeegee would be better than a mop) all round great place and would definitely recommend and return!

Fab break away and real nice bed and bedding . Defo be goin back

Snake bites

Most snake bites in the UK are not serious. But it's important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if:

  • you think you, or someone else, has been bitten by a snake

Find your nearest A&E

Information:

If you're not in the UK when you are bitten by a snake, contact the emergency medical services in the country you're in.

Get foreign travel advice on GOV.UK

What to do while you're waiting for help

Do

  • stay calm, most snake bites in the UK are not serious and can be treated

  • keep the part of your body that was bitten as still as you can

  • lie in the recovery position if you can

  • take paracetamol for any pain

  • try to remember the colour and pattern of the snake to tell the doctor

  • take off any jewellery and loosen clothes near the bite, in case it swells

Don’t

  • do not go near the snake, or try to catch or kill it

  • do not try to suck or cut the poison (venom) out of the bite

  • do not tie anything tightly round the part of the body where the bite is

  • do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can make bleeding worse

What happens at the hospital

You will usually need to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours if you have been bitten by a snake.

The bite will be cleaned and bandaged. You may be given an injection to help protect you from tetanus.

If you were bitten by a poisonous (venomous) snake you will be treated with a medicine to fight the venom. This is given through a thin tube into a vein, called a drip.

Types of UK snake

Only 3 types of snake are found in the wild in the UK.

The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Telling the doctors the colour and pattern of the snake that bit you could help them treat it.
